Three Common Mistakes Made by Yoga Newcomers

Whenever we start something new we have a certain feeling of nervousness and uncertainty of the unknown, but in most cases we power through it and get on with things very quickly and easily. Sometimes it isn't and can cause us to have an entirely negative first impression and perhaps never want to try that activity again, as we just give up. Yoga has many health benefits, on both a physical and mental level, that it would be a mistake for anyone to miss out on them because they gave up and quit on their first day.  With that in mind I will address the three most common mistakes of new Yoga members, and how to make sure they don't happen to you.

Mistake One:  Not knowing what  benefits you want  to get from Yoga.

The situation is that there are lots of styles and forms of Yoga and each has it's merits and charms, for example you might be doing yoga to reduce your stress levels, anxiety or to improve your fitness and health. You need to ask yourself why you wanted to do Yoga in the first place instead of another activity, for which then you can choose a style that meets your needs. You may want to set yourself goals, be they for physical reasons or mental reasons. If you do then  discuss them with the instructor of your class before you begin your first day. Yoga instructors are approachable and happy to talk about their passion, as they will be able to help you with your goals for the class and let you know if they are realistic, too high or too low.  Make sure your goals include a timeframe so it becomes something that is measurable.

Mistake Two:  Jumping in Feet First

Having decided that they will give Yoga a try, many of them will dive and jump feet first in to a twelve month stage by stage class, learning from basics to advance. The classes  usually use an upfront payment arrangement and progress from one level to the next as the weeks progress, learning new poses.  They are a fantastic way of being taught Yoga and becoming good at it, but it's possibly you will choose a class that is not right for you.

The best way to avoid this mistake is to join a Yoga beginner class, also known as a drop in class, where you will be given a trial bases to have a feel if this is the right option for you.  If you do these classes for a few weeks you will notice a high turnover of students as new people join and other people move on. The classes are designed to give you a sense for the different types of Yoga available. The experience of  students in the class varies greatly so you can expect the instructor to keep the classes quite tame, meaning poses that beginners can do. You are not obliged to attend every class, while on the trial bases as you only have to pay for the classes you attend.  With longer courses you can fall behind quickly if you do not attend for a week or two. With trial classes you will find that while each class is different the level stays quite low to cater for the newer people joining in.

Mistake Three:  Choosing the wrong teacher

A Yogi instructor has to be an apprentice to a skilled Guru for many years before they can teach even the simplest of Yoga techniques, like the lotus position. Nowadays a three day course over a long weekend is considered enough by some people, which can be a big mistake. There is a big difference in what you will achieve depending on the skills and abilities of the person teaching you, for which make sure that they have a high review and a qualification. Yoga has a regular appearance on the injury list and a large reason for this is the instructors who have been taught just enough are dangerous, as they might not be qualified enough to know the proper way to avoid these injuries.  A qualified teacher will have more knowledge, where as an unqualified teacher could cause some problems, so it's a good idea to check your instructors background and qualifications before you begin studying with them.

Also it is better to join a class then do Yoga at home because you will socialise with people of all ages and you will be taught professionally instead of watching Youtube videos on yoga techniques.
