The role of a modern business person can be a stressful one and there is always so much to do, like creating documents or making sure invoices are correct. It would take a lot of compelling reasons to convince a successful business person (or even an unsuccessful one) to incorporate something else to an already packed schedule, so why would they include regularly going to Yoga classes. For this article we examine the three main benefits of Yoga and how they apply to the busy business person.
Benefit Number One: Improve Physical Health
All business peoples' ultimate goal is to become wealthy? Have you heard the saying that your health is your wealth? No matter how much money you have, you cannot benefit from it, if you are dead and your personal health is poor because of neglection. But the question is not if one can afford the time for exercise to become healthy; it is if they can afford not to. Health is a shifting scale as you are either healthy, not healthy or worse dead. It's really important to think about how much your level of health affects your work, as if you are ill then you will not get much done. A healthy body and brain will allow you to concentrate more, work harder and increase the time you spend productively.
Yoga is the perfect way for a business person to look after their physical wellbeing. Because the exercises are low impacting they can be performed even by the most out of shape person, and the more regularly they are performed the better that person's health will become. Yoga is very efficient for releasing tension and reducing stress. During a workday, in the office, certain blockages develop around the body and many of our organs don't get the full amount of oxygen and nutrients that they need to function at peak efficiency, like our brain. Yoga stretches a variety of muscle groups in certain ways that will lead to these blockages being released and the blood flow bringing the bodies organs all the oxygen and nutrients they need.
Yoga's health benefits are both short term and long term. The blood flow is increased and the body functions better because it is achieving the nutrients it requires, which is immediate. Tension is also released from muscles and the bodies lymphatic system is able to effectively deal with waste products, as it improves our digestive system. In the longer term these will be ongoing benefits and will help with everyday life as we will not have upset stomache aches and pains. Our general balance, co-ordination and flexibility will also be greatly enhanced.
Benefit Number Two: Improve Mental Health
Have you ever considered the importance of breathing? We know that when someone stops they die, and even this simplistic understanding should tell us how important it is to breath. But breathing properly is often ignored. It's vital for the numerous health benefits, but also for the mental advantages it allows us, thinking more clearly and quickly.
The yoga sessions will begin with a standing, breathing exercise and holding a pose. The process of taking in a deep breath and releasing it slowly is incredibly calming and the basis of the breathing exercises are a vital backbone to the Yoga discipline. The purpose of this breathing technique is to draw the attention to the simple action of breathing through your nose and out through your mouth. We become very aware of the life giving benefit of a deep and controlled breathing cycle and are able to achieve a level of calmness that we often don't seek out in our everyday lives. That calmness itself is a stepping stone to achieving your focus.
The ability to focus is probably the most important primary skill in a busy work environment. There is always too much going on around us and so much that needs to be done, making it difficult to focus on one single task we are doing because of the multitude of things 'in the back of our mind' and 'the atmosphere around us'. Regular yoga teaches different methods to quickly clear our mind of all these other distractions and then focus our mental efforts on a single task. The self discipline that is learned from focusing on the body and becoming master of oneself is a major benefit of yoga.
Benefit Number Three: Achieving Happiness
Happiness is a goal that is often sacrificed in the short term in exchange for something else in the future where everything will come together and be okay. Yoga doesn't move you any closer to this, but because you develop a strong sense of self and connection with yourself, it is common to become more content with your current situation. You will find that the more you practise Yoga the more you will be comfortable spending time alone as well as amongst other people, improving your social network. Your sense of self worth will increase and you will perform better in social situations and have more confidence. This is the most important gift that Yoga will give to you.
